Do-It-Yourself Option
The advantage to this method is that it doesn’t cost you any money. Simply make a note of how you want your business information listed then manually go to each directory site and make sure the information listed for your business matches exactly how you want it displayed.
While this is a free option there two things to note:
- It takes a LOT of time
- It’s not a one and done option
Sure this option sounds preferable because it’s free and you think you only have to do it a single time and you’re done. But that’s not quite how it works.
Here’s why you can’t just update each directory once and never check it again.
- Listings like Google Business Listing can be edited by consumers meaning other people can submit changes to your information and unless you decline them, Google usually accepts them
for example, I had a client whose competitor suggested a change to the phone number – from my client’s number to the competitor number and Google accepted this change. It took a few weeks for my client to catch on because they were not actively managing this directory listing - Most directory sites pull data from data centers that don’t always have current, accurate information. So even though you manually updated the listing to the correct information when the directory site pulls from the data center it can override your information with old, incorrect information such as different phone numbers, old locations, etc…
- Any change to your address, phone number or business name means you have to manually change for each directory. If you ever make any changes to name, address or phone you have to go back to each directory to update again manually.
While this method is “free” it will take a lot of on-going time to manage.
Hire a Company Option
I know for most people reading this article hiring a company isn’t going to be the first choice they want to utilize because why pay someone when you can do it yourself. But hiring a company to manage your directory sites isn’t going to break your marketing piggybank and it will save you a LOT of time and headaches.
